Zwei Haflinger Pferde in den Bergen

The Haflinger Breed

The Mountain Pony With a Kind Personality

The Haflinger is a small horse breed that originated in the mountainous region of the Tyrolean Alps, which are located in what is now Austria and Italy. The breed is named after the village of Hafling. The villiage is located in the South Tyrol region of northern Italy. The Haflinger breed is believed to have been developed in the late 19th century by crossbreeding local Tyrolean mountain horses with Arabians. Horses from this breed were originally used as workhorses. Their small size and hardy nature are making them well-suited for farm work and transportation in the rugged mountain terrain of the region.

In the early 20th century, the Austrian government established a breeding program to promote the Haflinger as a riding and driving horse. The breed quickly gained popularity for its gentle temperament and adaptability to several sports.
