Bitless Riding – How to Start

Bitless riding refers to a style of horse riding in which the horse is ridden without the

use of a bit in its mouth. Instead of a bit, the horse wears a bitless bridle, such as a

 hackamore, side pull, or bosal.

The idea behind bitless riding is to provide a more natural and gentle experience for

the horse, as the use of a bit can sometimes cause discomfort or pain if not used

properly or if the horse has dental issues. Bitless riding also allows for clearer

communication between the horse and the rider. It encourages the use of subtle cues

 and body language.

How to Start Bitless Riding

If you are interested in starting your horse on bitless riding, here are some steps you can follow:

1. Choose the right bitless bridle: There are various types of bitless bridles available, such as hackamores, side pulls, and bosals. Do your research and choose a bridle that suits your horse’s needs, comfort, and riding style best.

2. Introduce the bridle gradually: Introduce the bitless bridle to your horse gradually. Start by allowing them to sniff and investigate the bridle. Then, put the bridle on without reins and let them get used to the feel of it.

3. Practice on the ground first: Before you start riding, practice leading your horse in the bridle and asking them to respond to light cues. This will help your horse understand the new cues and the pressure points of the bitless bridle.

4. Practice bitless riding in a safe and controlled environment: Start riding in a safe and controlled environment such as an arena or round pen. Focus on building a good communication system with your horse through the use of leg pressure, body language, and seat aids.

  5. Gradually increase the difficulty level: Once you and your horse are comfortable with bitless riding in a safe and controlled environment, gradually increase the level of difficulty by introducing new challenges such as riding on different terrains, riding with other horses, and more.

6. Get help from a professional: It’s always a good idea to get help from a professional when starting your horse on bitless riding. They can provide guidance on the appropriate bridle and give you tips on how to train your horse properly.
